Fashion Trends and News from around the world

This is a brand new feature for my lovely little website. Talented fashion journalists Natalie Nicholls and Vanessa Power write amusing and insightful monthly pieces about goings on in the fashion industry and where to buy the hottest trends.

Article of the Month: Will the modern day Grandad be a vintage chav?

In my daily life, I tend to encounter the older generation throughout my gruelling 9-5 death sentence that I have to suffer through in order to fund my tragic gap year.

The current generation of golden oldies appear to dress with class in their majority, which got me to contemplate what the next generation of grey haired foxes will decide to wear…

Obviously the fashions will change, and when we’re eighty seven, teenagers might be floating around in bubbles and wearing Lady Gaga esque meat dresses, but surely, we being people who have experienced sanity, will at least attempt to keep the class that I fret will disappear with the current pensioners?

If you’ve ever been into a town in the middle of the week you’ll have seen the lovely old dears dressed in their pleated skirts and blouses, wearing their best shoes and having tissues hidden up their sleeves just in case. And the grandpa figures dressed in lovely suits ties and usually accessorised with either a hat of some kind or some marvellous braces. But do we know such novelties? Would we be able to forget our sweat pants, jeans and checked shirts and accept our fate of ankle length flowered dresses and corduroy trousers?

I asked several friends and relatives the same question; ‘what will you wear when you’re old?’ my fathers response was slightly worrying – ‘ skinny jeans, doc martins and a skinny tie of course.’ I could only raise my eyebrows and imagine the significant amount of mid life crisis’ before he reaches this stage of sheer insanity.

I fear that as a generation whom swear by Levis, we won’t be able to let go of the jeans and we will begin to experience the impending doom of denim mixed with varicose veins. When you see old ladies in jeans now, potentially jeans they have had for a good few decades, what is your first thought? Mine is usually ‘oh please say this isn’t so’.

I know they want to stick to their youth, they still feel 21 but I wish they wouldn’t combine their white wash denim jeans with a pair of smashing open toe sandals that reveal an attempt at painted cracking toenails. Although this is currently the minority, I fear this is what our grandchildren will be dealing with!

Will people begin to live in the past a lot more than they do already? I’m sure you’ve already witnessed the usual middle aged woman experiencing her premature midlife crisis which includes sporting the budding stretch marks from their fourth ‘accident’ ,revealed by her favourite pink jewel encrusted crop top, and her indecent Facebook pictures that are stored under the name ‘Tracey Barbie Jones’.

So before you relinquish your power of class and dignity and succumb to the popular trend of tanning injections which have a side effect of green tinge to your limbs, remember it was the blue rinse and wooden clogs that made your past generations the power men and women that they were and are today. We aren’t going to win any wars with Oil of olay being replaced by an army of super chavs.

A little about the fabulous author!

Natalie Nicholls is a current gap year student with the desire to explore the world, become a journalist and attend a beautiful three years at university.

Generally a happy little soul with an over exaggerated outlook on the world. My time scale is extremely erratic, usually portrayed in minutes when in actual fact it is weeks.

I have wild lion hair making ‘sleek’ a word never used to describe my existence. I enjoy writing and my aim in life is to own an apartment with a room filled from floor to ceiling with books.
